Demurrage: What is it?
Demurrage charges are applied for storage of laden containers whilst in OOCL’s care in a port, rail terminal, feeder terminal, inland depot or container yard. Demurrage is applied after a designated free time. Demurrage charges may not include facility storage charges in Canada.
Detention: What is it?
Detention charges are applied for the storage or holding of containers whilst in our customers’ care outside a port, rail terminal, feeder terminal, inland depot or container yard. Detention is applied after a designated free time.
There are 2 types of Detention:-
Merchant Haulage: when customers do their own trucking and have to return the container back to OOCL’s care within the free period.
Carrier Haulage (Drop & Collect): container is left at the customer’s own premises whilst they load or devan it. OOCL's vehicle returns a different day to pull it out.

Inbound:
Demurrage
Dry - Free time is 4 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $120 per calendar day for days 1 through 5. Beginning the 6th day after free time expires the charges are USD $150 per calendar day.
Reefer - Free time is 3 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $350 per calendar day for days 1 through 3. Beginning the 4th day after free time expires the charges are USD $400 per calendar day.
Special Equipment - Free time is 4 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $195 per calendar day for days 1 through 5. Beginning the 6th day after free time expires the charges are USD $225 per calendar day.
For inbound cargo at the marine terminal, demurrage free time begins 1 working day after vessel completes discharge. For inbound cargo at the rail ramp facility, demurrage free time begins 1 working day after container availability at the rail ramp facility.
Detention
Dry - Free time is 5 working days plus day of interchange. After free time expires the charges are USD $120 per calendar day for days 1 through 5. Beginning the 6th day after free time expires the charges are USD $150 per calendar day.
Reefer - Free time is 3 working days plus day of interchange. After free time expires the charges are USD $350 per calendar day for days 1 through 3. Beginning the 4th day after free time expires the charges are USD $400 per calendar day.
Special Equipment - Free time is 3 working days plus day of interchange. After free time expires the charges are USD $195 per calendar day for days 1 through 5. Beginning the 6th day after free time expires the charges are USD $225 per calendar day.
Outbound:

Reefer - Free time is 5 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $275 per calendar day.
Special Equipment - Free time is 5 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $200 per calendar day.
Detention
Dry - Free time is 5 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $125 per calendar day.
Reefer - Free time is 3 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $275 per calendar day.
Special Equipment - Free time is 5 working days. After free time expires the charges are USD $200 per calendar day.
Working Day:
A working day is defined as any day the facility having the container is open for container delivery operations.
