Taiwan is located at the southeastern coast of Chinese mainland, about the south of Korea and Japan, and the north of Philippines. 

Taiwan and its adjacent islands have an area of nearly 36,000 square kilometers. The main island of Taiwan, slightly smaller than the Netherlands, is about 394 km (245 miles) long and 144 km (90 miles) wide at the broadest point.

There is no natural resource for Taiwan. Yet this island has prospered and become one of East Asia's economic “Tigers.”
 
In dollar amounts, Taiwan’s exports and imports were US$303.22 billion and US$270.13 billion respectively in 2013. Taiwan's current foreign reserve is US$425.75 billion, the fifth largest in the world. Taiwan is also one of major investors throughout Southeast Asia.

Ocean transportation is vital to the trading-oriented economy of Taiwan. The three container ports of Kaohsiung, Keelung/Taipei, and Taichung handle over 13 million TEU per annum.
