Detention: What is it?
Detention charges are applied for the storage or holding of containers whilst in our customers’ care outside a port, rail terminal, feeder terminal, inland depot or container yard. Detention is applied after the designated free time has expired.
There are 3 types of Detention:-
Merchant Haulage: when customers do their own trucking & have to return the container back to OOCL’s care within the free period.
Carrier Haulage (Drop & Collect): container is left at the customer’s own premises whilst they load or devan it. OOCL's vehicle returns a different day to pull it out.
Carrier Haulage (Driver & Vehicle Waiting Time): OOCL's driver waits whilst the container is loaded or devanned; if this exceeds the Free Period we will invoice Detention.
Import Merchant Haulage: 3 working days free, including day of pick up and day of restitution. Container must be returned by 23.59 hrs on day 3.
e.g. gate out Friday, free time starts Friday (Free Day 1), Saturday and Sunday are not counted as they are not working days, Monday and Tuesday are free days (Free Day 2 and Free Day 3), and container must be returned by 23.59 on Tuesday.
e.g. gate out Saturday, free time should start Saturday. But this is not a working day, and because free time is measured in working days, the first free day is Monday (Free Day 1). Tuesday and Wednesday are free days (Free Day 2 and Free Day 3), and container must be returned by 23.59 on Wednesday.
To avoid incurring Detention, customers are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that their appointed haulier returns equipment within the free time.
Carrier Haulage (Drop & Collect): day of drop and day of pull out
Carrier Haulage (Driver & Vehicle Waiting Time): 3 hours
Export Merchant Haulage: 3 working days free (for GP, High Cube and Reefer Equipment) 7 working days free (for special equipment - flatracks and open tops). This includes day of pick up if before 08.00 hrs, excludes day of pick up if 08.00 hrs or later, and includes day of restitution. Container must be returned by 23.59 hrs on day 3.
e.g. pick up Friday 07.30 hrs (Day 1), Saturday and Sunday are not counted as they are not working days, Monday and Tuesday are free days (Day 2 and Day 3), and container must be restituted by 23.59 on Tuesday.
Carrier Haulage (Drop & Collect): day of drop and day of pull out
